The Vortex Of Unproductivity

A few minutes ago Lars came by the office and wanted us to go with him to get an icecream, that was the beggining of the vortex of unproductivity. We told him to fetch Mikkel, and the vortex grew. He then fetched Allan making the vortex complete and we went to get him his icecream. When we returned, Martin had arrived, and the vortex reached critical mass.

It Binds Us…

I just love it when meetings and receptions at the meeting room across the hall from our offices have food and soda. Usually there will be leftovers and we are barely able to contain the carnage down here. The result of todays hunt is a free soda :)

Honest Thief

It is hard to be a successfull thief these days :( Ah well, I have got stuff to read. Allan and I have a weekly read-and-go-through-a-paper meeting, this week it is one of Gerths papers, called Cache-Oblivious Search Trees via Binary Trees of Small Height, now repeat that fast 10 times. For some strange reason all the papers we have read so far in these meetings have had Gerth as a co-author, that guy is just everywhere :).

Idling

I just returned from a lecture and Rune just left for a TA meeting so I am sitting here trying to convince myself to start doing something usefull. But it is past 15:00, it is friday and I am feeling a bit tired so I am not overly motivated. On top of that, the friday cafe just opened presenting yet another temptation. But I have to stay firm and start working, Rune and I have half a liter of cola and some cheese in the fridge which we will eat when he returns so I'd better do something usefull in the next hour or so if I want to do anything more today.
But what should I do, I could study for my course in cryptologic protocol theory, grade the papers from my students in the algorithms course, prepare for the exercise next week in the same course, work on some of my own projects or just sit here browsing and wasting time on a silly blog?
For the next five minutes I think I will select the last option. Yesterday Rune and I went to the gym early and returned to IT-parken where we saw the movie "12 monkeys" with a bunch of foreign Ph.d. students. I have seen that movie a couple of times but is was still very god. The guys ordered pizza but I had to make some massed potatos out of hot water and some prefabricated powder :|. Afterwards we went to "uni baren" and stayed for a couple of hours before going home. I had a really good time, and it actually my first visit to "uni baren" (about time some might say).

Study

So, my holiday will end in a week - time to get into the good old study pattern again. I'll be following some rather interesting courses next semester: dArkOs (about the low-level architecture of computers and how OS's work) and dPaSS ("programming in the large"). Along with those courses I'll be following a math course entitled "Algebra 1", go figure ;).
I've been doing a bit of coding throughout the summer, not much though, on a gameproject I'm working on - won't publish anything for atleast a couple of month though :(.

Algorithms and Data Structures

So, I've had my first exam now, it was in "Algorithms and Data Structures" and it went ok, it was not a stunning performance but I'm satisfied. My next exam is in a couple of days and is in my Probability course.
Tomorrow I'm attending my first belt test at my karate dojo, if I do well I will earn the right to wear the orange belt, wee.
I've finally found the time to get X windows up and running on my old machine and it is now running the VICE emulator as a fulltime C64, so I'm having lots of fun with the good old cpu.
Enough bla bla, see ya.

Exams

Exams are coming up in a few weeks so programming is going really slowly these days since I have to do alot of reading. The closest I've been to coding these last weeks is a project in a course about algorithms and datastructures, we're developing an algorithm to find the maximum matching in a bipartite graph and when we have proven it correct we have to implement it in Java. Not much gfx related in writing boring algo's in Java but atleast I get to type a bit :)

Linear Algebra Exams Done

Did a some minor updates to the site, most noticable I moved some of the news onto one of the "older news" pages this should make it more friendly to view on older computers.

Today I'm fine except for a minor headache, together with a friend I was out celebrating that the linear algrebra exams are well over with, and such celebrations tend to get very wet :) Anyways, I've started reading a bit for my next and last exam this semester which is about the basics of the java programming language, when I'm done with that exam (the 15th of january) I have the rest of the month off and plenty of time to do some coding :). Right now I'm waiting for the java SDK to download so I can start coding some java (I still don't like that language, well, there's nothing wrong with the language itself, but I don't like the fact that a single company owns it, and besides, it's just soo slow).

Linear Algebra

So, it took my linear algebra exam today and I passed, and I even think I did pretty well, I had to prove that a hermitian matrix is similar to a diagonal matrix and that the similarity can be achieved using unitary matrices. I didn't get a grade though since it was a pass/nopass exam. Anyways, I've now resumed coding in my various projects and it's nice not to be worried about the fact that I should be studying.:)

Starting Computer Science

Wow, it's been precisely two month since my last post. That's the longest I've left this site untouched while it has been around here. Alot of things have happened since, mainly I've started studying computer science and math at the university of Aarhus here in Denmark, I've been at it ever since and I've had no time to do my own projects, which is making me quite frustrated :). I've moved 170 km from good old mom and dad so I have to do a lot of weird things now that I never thought parents did, like dishwashing and ironing clothes :). Anyways, my brand new life rules so far and I'm quite happy these days, if only I had more time.

We have to learn Java at uni for our "Introduction to Programming" course, and so far I hate it. I miss screwing up pointers and stuff, and I can't stand the waiting while the jvm fires up on my compiled bytecode.

I wrote in on of my latest newsposts that it was getting harder to be a newbie on the net, and I've just experienced yet another example of that. I've had an email address at crosswinds.net for a couple of years now, and it's always been the one I used on more suspect sites to avoid getting my primary address spammed. Well, they've closed POP3 acces to their servers for unpaying customers which mean that I have to use their webinterface, which I won't so that address has to be scrapped aswell. My new contact address is thoooms@skjoldhoej.dk and as always, WRITE ME! I like the feedback although I don't get that much of it :(.

The next thing I had planned to start learning was BSP trees and portals, but I miight wait a while until I start coding them since I've started working on a demo with a finnish guy for some, yet undetermined, demoparty. We are still working on the storyline though so it might be a while before the coding kicks in. I might have time to write a Q2 level viewer in the meantime or something, that depends on how hard it is to do.

Oh, and I've also become a news admin at cfxweb.net which is really cool, you should go there right away, consider posting in the forums once in a while too - we're getting bored :). Well until next time, have fun.
