So, we are now one hour into the competition. Aarhus 1 started out slowly but just managed to get their first two problems accepted in the last few minutes so they made quite a jump to eleventh place. See the live scoreboard and the videofeed.

Contest About To Start
The Northwest European Programming Contest 2006 is starting in 10 minutes. This year they even have a fancy video feed with commentaries and graphics, check it out at the NWERC 2006 site. I am sitting in the main auditorium with some other coaches watching the feed on a big screen, very nice – I wish I had some pop corn.
Online at NWERC 2006
I am currently sitting in a hall way at KTH in Stockholm where the North West European Programming Contest 2006 (NWERC 2006) is taking place. I am coaching two teams this year, after having participated in 2005,2004 and 2003, the teams (Aarhus 1 and Aarhus 2) will hopefully do good. The contest starts at 10 swedish time tomorrow and the scoreboard will be updated online for the world to follow :)
Right now the teams are doing the test contest to get to know the contest setup and coming up in 30 minutes is lunch followed by a trip to the Wasa museum. Following this a guy from google will give a talk and then we are off for the contest dinner.
Yesterday we (me and the Aarhus teams) walked around in Stockhom ending up with a visit to the Hard Rock Cafe which had a special Iron Maiden theme night, talk about a lot of black shirts with weird drawings ;)
I guess I will be sufficiently bored during the contest tomorrow that I may actually update this site again at that point, we will see.
Wish us luck!
Water Polo
I just returned from todays water polo matches in division 4, and I am very tired. My shoulders have lost all strength, my legs can hardly move. I am glad that I have time for a power nap before my dorms traditional “Tour de Chambre”-party, which starts tonight :) The matches went okay considering how many beginners (myself included) that our team consisted of, but I am glad I do not have to crawl one more pool length today!
Christmas Is Near
It is now November and Rune and I are shining up our office for the holiday. The entrance to our office now looks like this:

The basket to the left is where we accept donations to help fund our excellent research – feel free to donate :)
Climbing
Today I went climbing at DGI-Huset in central Århus with Jesper who invited me to come along. After an introduction to the gear we teamed up and started climbing. Hanging many meters above the ground and trusting the guy on the ground holding the other end of the robe to lower you safely to the ground is a great experience. Being the guy on the ground responsible for the safety off the climber is also quite thrilling. Climbing in itself was funny and great exercise for the arms and legs, I hope to go again sometime soon. Do you want to join me and try it out? The facilities at DGI-Huset were great, and they have the tallest indoor climbing wall in Denmark.

Farewell To Fitzi And A Mop Of Hair
During Fitzis farewell party on saturday we suddenly decided to cut Lars’ hair. Saturday night a bit after 1 AM he looked like this:

A few minutes later, like this:

and the end result is:

Note that this was completly voluntary, and no animals (except for the flock of unicorns and a bunch of frogs rumored to live a quiet life deep in the inner parts of Lars’ hair) were harmed in the production of these pictures. Surprisingly, none of the participants in this act were drunk.
Hiking and Tubing
Saturday I went with a couple of the Duke computer science people to Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina. We hiked the few miles from the parking lot to the rocks and took some nice pictures and enjoyed the view.

After the hike we went straigth to the tubing place about an hour away where we met up with more people and set out on the tuping “cruise”. This was my first time tubing and I had never heard of the concept before, but it is actually a great and relaxing experience drifting slowly down a wide river with your butt in the water and a floating cooler by your side, I would definitely like to do this again some time.

More pictures here. You will notice that the waters of the Dan River are quite brown, the river was quite muddy due to a storm the night before our trip.
New Camera
I finally bought a camera, the Canon SD700 IS (AKA IXUS 800 IS). I am very satisfied with the camera, it has an excellent build quality and good image quality. The camera even worked out of the box with GPhoto and GTHUMB. Right now I am trying to decide if I should stick with F-Spot or switch to the WINE powered Google Picasa for GNU/Linux.
The picture was taken yesterday at Hanging Rock State Park and has been cropped and resized in The GIMP.
Disc Golf
I’m leaving the office for today to go play disc golf, should be fun (and varm). I guess I should have played some more freesbie before I left Denmark – I am sure I will lose big time :)
