Update

by Thomas on June 26th, 2007

I am currently sitting alone in my very cool office (called the “fish bowl”) which I share with 8 other interns. Local time is about 18:00 and there is two things I should be doing right now. The first thing is to work on a paper I have to get ready this week to send to my co-authors, the second is actually going home on my bike and cook some dinner. I keep postponing the latter since I can work a lot better from here, and with 34 degrees Celcius outside the half-hour bike ride home is gonna be quite warm. Well, at least the trafic stinks :). Instead of working on the latter, the paper that is, I am procrastinating by writing this post.

Things are going well here in New Jersey, I have started playing volleyball with some AT&T Research people and soccer with some of the other interns. Last friday we went to a bar in New York for a few beers, it was nice to be back on Manhatten, I even passed the Hotel I stayed at (The Manhatten Brodway Hotel) and ate the same at the same deli that Rune, Mette and I used heavily last summer. I now also have a facebook account, so if you know me, login to facebook (or create an account and _then_ login) and add me as your friend.

    That sounds nice.

By the way, did you really eat a diner or is that just an error? :)

  2. Sounds like you’re having fun over there… but why do you have a facebook page? I thought it was something for teenagers? When will your MySpace page be up? :-)

  3. Martin: It is the other way around. [1]. Facebook was originally designed only for university/college students in the US.
    Quote:
“A teenager’s bedroom, plastered with posters (and brands) and with continuous background music, sounds a lot like a MySpace profile. Add into the room a teenager or two who are always on the phone or text messaging friends about gossip or the hottest new band — and very generally speaking, you’ve nailed much of the appeal of MySpace. The fact that teenagers are increasingly using the site’s internal messaging system over email says it all. Additionally, those posters on the wall can be other user’s profiles, which include bands and brands vying for wall space.

In contrast, Facebook is much more popular amongst college students and graduates/professionals (due to it’s University roots). The site’s design is far less customizable — you can’t decorate your room. Instead, any customization is about deciding what functionality to include. This is even more so now that third parties can set-up-shop on the site and add new features which fulfill every possible need. I logged into Facebook today to accept a few friend requests, and noticed a professional networking event, that one of my contacts was looking to hire, and another had a rather nice laptop for sale. Getting that info took seconds due to Facebook’s controlled and efficient interface. Completely different to MySpace.”

  4. Ah, okay, I stand corrected :-) I guess we wont be seeing a MySpace page from you, then?

  5. Probably not :)

  6. But will we see you create a facebook account? (or the others at DAIMI) You can probably find some of the people you know from your stay in Schwitzerland on it.
