Installing Fedora Core 5 (Stupid Stupid Stupid)

Yesterday I downloaded the Fedora Core 5 (FC5) DVD image and burned it to disk. I started the installation today, and I wanted my father too see how easy installing it was. When it was time to setup up the partitions I mentioned that you would normally just allow anaconda to figure out that kinda stuff automatically, but that I had to do something special for my setup. I then proceeded into the custom partion setup screen and pointed anaconda to the already created /boot, / and /home partitions with the intention of leaving /home unchanged and format the rest. But since I wanted everything to seem very easy and quick in order not to scare my father I was a bit to quick to dismiss various dialogs and was met with a bright and crisp “Formatting /home” dialog when the installation started. Yeah!!

So, goodbye to the danish digital signature, the e-banking certificate, 5 years worth of emails, my gpg secret key, my ssh secret key and various documents and stuff. I could recreate some of the data from various sources but the emails and the gpg secret key remains lost. Sadly I did not create a certificate allowing me to revoke the secret key nor did I keep any backups of it on non-volatile media. In summation, I have been a total jackass today :|

Hrmph

This guy who is walking around peeing on thing and calling himself an artist is apparently funded by The Danish Arts Agency and Kulturhus Ã…rhus.
At this point I would like to quote the uncyclopedia:

Art seems to fulfill a basic hunger of mankind. Womankind is also artistic, and gaykind is gifted in interior decoration and hair styling.

What makes humans create art? Is it the desire to have something nice to look at instead of the same old crap they’ve got lying around the house? Is it an attempt to infuse meaning, substance, and spiritual nourishment into their lives? Or is it just an idle passtime, slightly more interesting than picking crabs out of their pubic hair?

We don’t know. Neither do you, smartypants.

I need to take a piss, would anymore like to sponsor it? I can call it “art” if that helps..

It Binds Us…

I just love it when meetings and receptions at the meeting room across the hall from our offices have food and soda. Usually there will be leftovers and we are barely able to contain the carnage down here. The result of todays hunt is a free soda :)

Futurama is Back

Good news everyone, I just saw this post on slashdot, seems Futurama is going back into production!

The spring cleaning yesterday went very well and we were finished earlier than i had expected, when we were done we ordered pizza, watched Zoolander, and went to the dorm bar. I stayed?Â?  quite a while. Today I got up late and went for a walk for about an hour with David and Mette and spent the rest of the day idling and trying to read a paper, I have to present tomorrow. We made mashed potatoes and a lot of bacon for dinner. Well, enough ramblings, I’m off.

Spring Cleaning

Today we do the mandatory spring cleaning here at the dorm. The “spring” part seems rather theoretical though since it is currently freezing 7 deegrees.?Â?  We start the clearing a bit earlier than last year, the cold aside it is actually nice to the the bloody thing done so we do not have to walk around thinking about a forthcoming cleaning. It usually takes all twelwe of us an entire day to do the cleaning, from 9 in the morning to about 7 in the evening. This year however we have two empty rooms and so we are only 10 people. On the other hand eight of us have tried this before so that might speed things up. Personally this is my fifth spring cleaning here. Well, I’d better go out and eat breakfast and empty my drawer in the kitchen and do my remaining dishes, see ya.

(By the way, if anyone reading this feels like coming by the dorm and help, feel free to do so! :) )

Being Spontaneous

I was just sitting here at the office, the time was 19:00 and I had not eaten yet. I suddenly realised that I didn’t want to go home to the dorm and waste a friday night doing nothing or working. So I called Mette and Janus and asked them if they wanted to go see Syriana and eat out. They were in on the idea so now I am going downtown to eat at some kind of restaurant and then to the movies, great evening.

Funding for the Arts

Apparently the pictorial artists in Jutland are getting less funding than their collegies from Zealand. I have a solution to that problem. We should simply distribute less money to the artists in Zealand so that they are on the same level as the ones in Jutland, that should make everyone happy!

Honest Thief

It is hard to be a successfull thief these days :( Ah well, I have got stuff to read. Allan and I have a weekly read-and-go-through-a-paper meeting, this week it is one of Gerths papers, called Cache-Oblivious Search Trees via Binary Trees of Small Height, now repeat that fast 10 times. For some strange reason all the papers we have read so far in these meetings have had Gerth as a co-author, that guy is just everywhere :).

Testing Ubuntu

I gave up on the old computer, and have now bought a “new” old computer from David from my dorm. The specs on the new computer is roughly the same as that of the old one. The only really important changes is that I now have 1024 megs of memory and a Geforce4 Ti instead of the old Geforce 2 MX.

After having reinserted my old disks I found that I could no longer boot my Windows XP or Fedora Core 1 installation. Now reinstalling Windows XP on new hardware but unchanged product key is likely troublesome with activation codes and all I decided to cut right to the chase and install Ubuntu as the first thing.?Â?  At first I was thinking of waiting for Fedore Core 5 which are currently set to be released sometime next week, but I decided to stop waiting and try something new.

So far I really like this Ubuntu system, I have never felt a GNU/Linux system running Gnome to be more responsive, it is a massive improvement on this machine compared to Fedora Core 1, or maybe it is just the added 512 megs of RAM that does the trick?

While apt-get finished downloading the 170 megs of updates to the system I installed from the CD I am going to brush my teeth and go to bed with my newest book. The book is?Â?  Scattered Suns, the fourth book in the Saga of the Seven Suns series which just keeps getting better and better. I bought the book this friday and now I am afraid that I am almost done reading it. I’ll have to wait for at least a couple of months for next book in the series, Of Fire and Night,?Â? ?Â?  which is scheduled to be released July 2006, one should never start reading series still in writing! I even got my neighbours Mette and David hooked on the books too, although they are way to cheap to buy them on their own, they just keep pestering me with loan requests :)
