Exam Day and Lots of Books

As Rune reports we did not Advanced Algorithms - Data Structures, Turingget much work done friday because the exam in Advanced Algorithms – Data Structures was placed in the meeting room right across from our office. Because of this a bunch of people hang out at our office waiting for their turn. The picture shows Burger, Casper, Lars and Mikkel (and me by way of a reflection in the door). When the exam finished, we had an hour to work before going of to the PhD reception of Malgorzata Biernacka, PhD receptions always have the same basic menu, one component of said menu is salmon and cheese, two things I really like. I think Rune and I filled our plate three/four times during that reception, Slackenerny would be proud.

Mikoline is visiting this week and today we went downtown for books. I had ordered Herb Sutter’s, Exceptional C++ and More Exceptional C++, I look forward to reading them both. I have said it before, I really like the danish library system, it was incredible easy to get those book even though they were nowhere in Ã…rhus, I simple used bibliotek.dk, found them and ordered them and could then go pick them up today after receiving an email saying that they have arrived, how is that for service! I also borrowed three books in the Carl Hamilton series. After visiting the library we went to the GAD bookstore in Bruuns Galleri where I bought book two and three in the Saga of the Seven Suns series. I finished the first book in the series a couple of days ago, and I really enjoyed it.

Moving Posts

I have now finished the boring and repetetive task of moving all my posts at my old homepage hosted by Janus. As I promised in my first post on this blog, I will now begin moving the entries of my old and very old homepages. Moving the entries have been a quit boring process since I have done it by hand, I need to move all pictures and stuff too to enable the old content to be accessible. But I hope that moving everything to this wordpress platform will help me next time I move to a new platform, everything is nicely packed into a MySQL database.

Well I have to go, while being hospitalized I had nothing better to do than watch TV and I saw the third episode of the series “24 hours” currently running on danish TV-2, so now I want to follow the rest the episodes – and one of them is coming up right now, see ya.

Back at the Office

Today was my first day back at the office. I arrived kinda late after an interesting ride on my bike on the icy and snow filled streets of Ã…rhus. Rune and I went to Thomas’ Ph.D. reception. Among the free food I found some salmon which I could actually eat by squishing it with my work. Congratulations to Thomas for getting his Ph.D.. When I finally got home today and finished cooking my dinner I actually broke one of the rubber bands holding my jaw in place – so now I have to go and get a replacement somehow, how annoying.

Day of Travelling

I am going back to Århus today, It is freezing eight degrees here in the northern part of Jutland and it is freezing five degrees in Århus, I think I should dress warm ;) Tomorrow I am going to Thomas’s reception, he is defending his thesis the same day. Pd.D receptions are nice, especially due to the free food, heck Lars may even show up ;)

Getting Settled

I have been playing quite a bit with wordpress and phpMyAdmin since last time. I have installed a new theme, and hacked it a bit, for instance I have made it show links to the pages at the top of the main page. I have also moved the files on the server from the “blog” subdirectory and out to the root. This tourned out to be quite the hassle since wordpress stores absolute paths to my uploaded images, so none of my images worked. I ended up installing phpMyAdmin, dumping my database to a sequence of SQL statements, and then doing a search a replace in a standard text editor, things should be working now – I hope :). So how do you like my new theme?
If you feel like creating another header image for me, I would be very gratefull. I am not much of an artist, besides my skill as a code poet ;)

Update: Ah shit, it seems I messed up the character encoding so danish characters and other weird characters are ruined. I do think I will go through and fix it since there aren’t that many danish characters yet, and new ones should still work.

Teaching, Spring 2006

I have been assigned as a teaching assistent to the two parts of Gerth’s course on Algorithms and Datastructures. That course was my top priority so I am happy with that, it will hopefully be a more challenging experience than teaching Introduction to Programming was. I am pleasantly surprised that we were notified in relatively good time, so we actually have time to prepare for the first class which is in week 5. Ahh well, I am procrastinating (again, sigh), I should go back to work. See ya.

Everyone Here Yet?

The last of the DAIMI crowd, Mikkel, has now created his own blog. Now we are just waiting for Martin to update the planet.

Today have been rather productive, I had porridge for breakfast, blended danish rice pudding for lunch and I’m having blended potatoes, meat balls and sausages for supper, yummy yummy and I have just finished baking three, hopefully good, pizzas for my parents. Furthermore I have been to the doctor to have the stitches in my chin removed and I have even managed to do some “real” work on some code too.

Yesterday I went with my dad to buy a wireless router, and I now have access from my laptop everywhere in their house – very nice. I have disabled WPA authentication for now since I had problems convincing Fedora Core 4 and iwconfig to connect. I have later found out that I need something like wpa_supplicant of xsupplicant to do the authentication for me, but I really do not want to spend more time on it since I plan on returning to Århus on Sunday. I might stop by the dorm and the university friday though, I’m going to a check at the hospital. I hope they will remove the rubber bands from my jaws so I can speak properly again ;)

We have a winner

FireworksA few minutes ago Martin won the quiz by guessing that I was making meatballs. Of course, I could not eat them before blending them with potates, butter and lots of milk :). I would like to thank the participants for taking part in this little quiz with good faith, and I look forward to awarding Martin his prize.

Entertainment for the Masses – Real Prizes!

Here at moelhave.dk, I am dedicated to entertain my visitors. My support, research and development, and customer relation teams are working around the clock to develop new ideas for a demanding audience. I now launch the first, and maybe only, installment of the “food quiz”, I have been cooking something rather simple today and have taken pictures of the process. I will start out with an early picture of the process and post pictures taken of my cooking until it’s completion – or until someone guesses what I am cooking. Beer! The price for the first correct guess is a beer in the friday cafe at DAIMI or at the bar at the Skjoldhøj dormitory. The winner will have to be present at one of these places, while I am there too, in order to claim the prize. The guesses are to be placed by using the comment functionality of this post and should be in either Danish or English. You are entitled to multiple guesses (within reason) and normal comments praising me for this great idea are of course wellcome too.
This first quiz is easy, so be prepared. I will post the first picture later today (before 20:00 danish time), the pictures will be posted in this post.

If you are a loser and have not had a single victory your entire life, this is your chance to finally win something important. Step into the light, you can do it. Good luck everybody. :)
